BACKGROUND: Militaries have historically utilised generic physical fitness tests to assess physical readiness, but there has been a recent shift to develop physical employment standards (PES) based on actual job demands. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this investigation was to characterise the physical demands of critical tasks performed by Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) personnel to inform PES development. METHODS: Job task analysis were performed for 27 RAAF trades. Criterion tasks were identified through a systematic approach involving workshops and field-observations. The identified tasks were assessed for dominant physical capacity and grouped into movement-based clusters. Psychophysiological measures were collected from personnel performing the tasks. RESULTS: Of 87 criterion tasks, 92% were characterised as manual handling dominant. Across these 87 tasks the principal physical capacities were: muscular strength (59%), muscular endurance (52%) and cardiorespiratory endurance (39%). The most common movement clusters were Lift to Platform (44%) and Lift and Carry (38%). Lift to Platform tasks required lifting to a median height of 1.32 m (1.20 -1.65 m) and a median mass of 25.0 kg (21.0 -28.9 kg) per person. Median carry mass was 25.0 kg (22.4 -36.1 kg) per person and distance was 26.0 m (17.5 -50.0 m). Median task mean 'Vdot;O2, HR and RPE were 1.8 L.min- 1 (1.5-2.2 L.min- 1), 137 b.min- 1 (120-144) and 13 (12-14). CONCLUSIONS: The high proportion of manual handling criterion tasks emphasises the importance of these activities and the underlying physical capacities for RAAF personnel. Current fitness assessments are unlikely to predict job task performance.

INTRODUCTION: Subjective measures may offer practitioners a relatively simple method to monitor recruit responses to basic military training (BMT). Yet, a lack of agreement between subjective and objective measures may presents a problem to practitioners wishing to implement subjective monitoring strategies. This study therefore aims to examine associations between subjective and objective measures of workload and sleep in Australian Army recruits. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty recruits provided daily rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and differential RPE (d-RPE) for breathlessness and leg muscle exertion each evening. Daily internal workloads determined via heart rate monitors were expressed as Edwards training impulse (TRIMP) and average heart rate. External workloads were determined via global positioning system (PlayerLoadTM) and activity monitors (step count). Subjective sleep quality and duration was monitored in 29 different recruits via a customized questionnaire. Activity monitors assessed objective sleep measures. Linear mixed-models assessed associations between objective and subjective measures. Akaike Information Criterion assessed if the inclusion of d-RPE measures resulted in a more parsimonious model. Mean bias, typical error of the estimate (TEE) and within-subject repeated measures correlations examined agreement between subjective and objective sleep duration. RESULTS: Conditional R2 for associations between objective and subjective workloads ranged from 0.18 to 0.78, P < 0.01, with strong associations between subjective measures of workload and TRIMP (0.65-0.78), average heart rate (0.57-0.73), and PlayerLoadTM (0.54-0.68). Including d-RPE lowered Akaike Information Criterion. The slope estimate between objective and subjective measures of sleep quality was not significant. A trivial relationship (r = 0.12; CI -0.03, 0.27) was observed between objective and subjective sleep duration with subjective measures overestimating (mean bias 25 min) sleep duration (TEE 41 min). CONCLUSIONS: Daily RPE offers a proxy measure of internal workload in Australian Army recruits; however, the current subjective sleep questionnaire should not be considered a proxy measure of objective sleep measures.

INTRODUCTION: The injury definitions and surveillance methods commonly used in Army basic military training (BMT) research may underestimate the extent of injury. This study therefore aims to obtain a comprehensive understanding of injuries sustained during BMT by employing recording methods to capture all physical complaints. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six hundred and forty-six recruits were assessed over the 12-week Australian Army BMT course. Throughout BMT injury, data were recorded via (1) physiotherapy reports following recruit consultation, (2) a member of the research team (third party) present at physical training sessions, and (3) recruit daily self-reports. RESULTS: Two hundred and thirty-five recruits had ≥1 incident injury recorded by physiotherapists, 365 recruits had ≥1 incident injury recorded by the third party, and 542 recruits reported ≥1 injury-related problems via the self-reported health questionnaire. Six hundred twenty-one, six hundred eighty-seven, and two thousand nine hundred sixty-four incident injuries were recorded from a total of 997 physiotherapy reports, 1,937 third-party reports, and 13,181 self-reported injury-related problems, respectively. The lower extremity was the most commonly injured general body region as indicated by all three recording methods. Overuse accounted for 79% and 76% of documented incident injuries from physiotherapists and the third party, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights that injury recording methods impact injury reporting during BMT. The present findings suggest that traditional injury surveillance methods, which rely on medical encounters, underestimate the injury profile during BMT. Considering accurate injury surveillance is fundamental in the sequence of injury prevention, implementing additional injury recording methods during BMT may thus improve injury surveillance and better inform training modifications and injury prevention programs.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to quantify sleeping heart rate (HR) and HR variability (HRV) alongside circulating tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) concentrations during 12-week Basic Military Training (BMT). We hypothesised that, despite a high allostatic load, BMT would increase cardiorespiratory fitness and HRV, while lowering both sleeping HR and TNFα in young healthy recruits. METHODS: Sixty-three recruits (18-43 years) undertook ≥ 2 overnight cardiac frequency recordings in weeks 1, 8 and 12 of BMT with 4 h of beat-to-beat HR collected between 00:00 and 06:00 h on each night. Beat-to-beat data were used to derive HR and HRV metrics which were analysed as weekly averages (totalling 8 h). A fasted morning blood sample was collected in the equivalent weeks for the measurement of circulating TNFα concentrations and predicted VO2max was assessed in weeks 2 and 8. RESULTS: Predicted VO2max was significantly increased at week 8 (+ 3.3 ± 2.6 mL kg-1 min-1; p < 0.001). Sleeping HR (wk1, 63 ± 7 b min-1) was progressively reduced throughout BMT (wk8, 58 ± 6; wk12, 55 ± 6 b min-1; p < 0.01). Sleeping HRV reflected by the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD; wk1, 86 ± 50 ms) was progressively increased (wk8, 98 ± 50; wk12, 106 ± 52 ms; p < 0.01). Fasted circulating TNFα (wk1, 9.1 ± 2.8 pg/mL) remained unchanged at wk8 (8.9 ± 2.5 pg/mL; p = 0.79) but were significantly reduced at wk12 (8.0 ± 2.4 pg/mL; p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Increased predicted VO2max, HRV and reduced HR during overnight sleep are reflective of typical cardiorespiratory endurance training responses. These results indicate that recruits are achieving cardiovascular health benefits despite the high allostatic load associated with the 12-week BMT.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate: (i) the chronicity and phasic variability of sleep patterns and restriction in recruits during basic military training (BMT); and (ii) identify subjective sleep quality in young adult recruits prior to entry into BMT. DESIGN: Prospective observational study. METHODS: Sleep was monitored using wrist-worn actigraphy in Army recruits (n = 57, 18-43 y) throughout 12-weeks of BMT. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was completed in the first week of training to provide a subjective estimate of pre-BMT sleep patterns. A mixed-effects model was used to compare week-to-week and training phase (Orientation, Development, Field, Drill) differences for rates of sub-optimal sleep (6-7 h), sleep restriction (≤6 h), and actigraphy recorded sleep measures. RESULTS: Sleep duration was 06:24 ±â€¯00:18h (mean ±â€¯SD) during BMT with all recruits experiencing sub-optimal sleep and 42% (n = 24) were sleep restricted for ≥2 consecutive weeks. During Field, sleep duration (06:06 ±â€¯00:36h) and efficiency (71 ±â€¯6%; p < 0.01) were reduced by 15-18 min (minimum - maximum) and 7-8% respectively; whereas, sleep latency (30 ±â€¯15 min), wake after sleep onset (121 ±â€¯23 min), sleep fragmentation index (41 ±â€¯4%) and average awakening length (6.5 ±â€¯1.6 min) were greater than non-Field phases (p < 0.01) by 16-18 min, 28-33 min, 8-10% and 2.5-3 min respectively. Pre-BMT global PSQI score was 5 ±â€¯3, sleep duration and efficiency were 7.4 ±â€¯1.3 h and 88 ±â€¯9% respectively. Sleep schedule was highly variable at pre-BMT (bedtime: 22:34 ±â€¯7:46 h; wake time: 6:59 ±â€¯1:42 h) unlike BMT (2200-0600 h). CONCLUSIONS: The chronicity of sub-optimal sleep and sleep restriction is substantial during BMT and increased training demands exacerbate sleep disruption. Exploration of sleep strategies (e.g. napping, night-time routine) are required to mitigate sleep-associated performance detriments and maladaptive outcomes during BMT.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the disparity in the specification and physiological demand of a task simulation when developed by two independent panels of experiential experts. DESIGN: Independent groups design. METHODS: Two groups of experiential experts from the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) worked independently to design, and then complete a simulation of a generic occupational task; the establishment of a security control point. Task duration, oxygen consumption, and cardiac frequency were measured whilst each panel completed the task simulation. Maximal acceptable work duration (MAWD) and the percentage of MAWD (%MAWD) were also calculated. Independent t-tests were used to determine differences (P < 0.05) between the measured variables. RESULTS: No differences were observed in the average oxygen consumption (1.26 ± 0.25 L min-1 and 1.28 ± 0.29 L min-1 respectively; P = 0.84), or cardiac frequency (134 ± 16.4 beats·min-1 and 125 ± 8.5 beats·min-1 respectively; P = 0.12) between Panel 1 and Panel 2. However, there was a significant difference between panels with respect to task duration (Panel 1: 15.5 ± 3.68 min; Panel 2: 34.20 ± 9.60 min; P < 0.01), and the %MAWD (Panel 1: 5.32 ± 3.17%, Panel 2: 12.15 ± 9.40%, P = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: The physiological demand of a task simulation is dependent upon the group of experts consulted to develop the simulation. It is critical that input from a wide representation of experiential experts is considered when developing task simulations to avoid bias towards the perceptions of the experts consulted.

This study described the whole blood fatty acid profile and Omega-3 Index (O3I) of Australian Army recruits at the commencement and completion of basic military training (BMT). Eighty males (17-34 y, 77.4 ± 13.0 kg, 43.5 ± 4.3 mL/kg/min) and 37 females (17-45 y, 64.3 ± 8.8 kg, 39.3 ± 2.7 mL/kg/min) volunteered to participate (N = 117). Whole blood samples of each recruit were collected using a finger prick in weeks 1 and 11 (n = 82) and analysed via gas chromatography for the relative proportions of each fatty acid (mean [95% confidence interval]). The macronutrient characteristics of the diet offerings was also determined. At commencement there was a low omega-3 status (sum of omega-3; 4.95% [4.82-5.07]) and O3I (5.03% [4.90-5.16]) and no recruit recorded an O3I >8% (desirable). The omega-6/omega-3 (7.04 [6.85-7.23]) and arachidonic acid/eicosapentaenoic acid (AA/EPA) (18.70 [17.86-19.53]) ratios for the cohort were also undesirable. The BMT mess menu provided a maximum of 190 mg/day of EPA and 260 mg/day of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The O3I of the recruits was lower by week 11 (4.62% [4.51-4.78], p < 0.05), the omega-6/omega-3 increased (7.27 [7.07-7.47], p < 0.05) and the AA/EPA remained elevated (17.85 [16.89-18.81]). In conclusion, Australian Army recruits' omega-3 status remained undesirable during BMT and deserves nutritional attention. Novelty: Australian Army recruits' Omega-3 Index, at the commencement of BMT, was reflective of the Western-style diet. The BMT diet offered minimum opportunity for daily EPA and DHA consumption. Every recruit experienced a further reduction of their Omega-3 Index during BMT.

Military personnel are required to complete physically demanding tasks when performing work and training, which may be quantified through the physical stress imposed (external load) or the resultant physiological strain (internal load). The aim of this narrative review is to provide an overview of the techniques used to monitor work and training load in military settings, summarise key findings, and discuss important practical, analytical, and conceptual considerations. Most investigations have focused upon measuring external and internal load in military training environments; however, limited data exist in operational settings. Accelerometry has been the primary tool used to estimate external load, with heart rate commonly used to quantify internal load. Supplemental to heart rate, psychophysiological and biochemical measures have also been investigated to elucidate aspects of internal load. Broadly, investigations have revealed that military training requires personnel to perform relatively large volumes of physical activity (e.g. averaging ∼15,000 steps·day-1) of typically low-moderate intensity activity (<6 MET), although considerable temporal and inter-individual variability is observed from these gross mean estimates. There are limitations associated with these measures and, at best, estimates of external and internal load can only be inferred. These limitations are particularly pertinent for military tasks such as load carriage and manual material handling, which often involve complex activities performed individually or in teams, in a range of operational environments, with multiple layers of protection, over a protracted duration. Comprehensively quantifying external and internal loads during these functional activities poses substantial practical and analytical challenges.

Physically demanding essential military tasks include load carriage, manual material handling and casualty evacuation. This narrative review characterizes the main physical attributes related to performance of these occupational tasks and reviews physical training intervention studies in military settings to improve performance in these military tasks. Load carriage performance requires both aerobic and neuromuscular fitness with greater emphasis on maximal strength and absolute maximal oxygen uptake, especially when carrying heavier loads. In manual material handling, maximal strength and power are strongly associated with discrete lifting, while muscular strength, muscular endurance and aerobic fitness are also associated with repetitive lifting performance. Maximal strength including grip strength, muscular endurance, absolute maximal oxygen uptake and anaerobic capacity are associated with casualty evacuation performance. The results of the present review particularly emphasize the role of muscular fitness in successful performance of the reviewed military occupational tasks. Training intervention studies indicate that load carriage performance can be effectively improved by combining strength, aerobic and specific load carriage training. Improvement in maximal lifting capacity can be achieved by strength training or combined strength and aerobic training, while strength and aerobic training alone, or their combination are effective in improving repetitive lifting, and carry tasks. Only a few studies are available for casualty evacuation and the results are inconclusive but may indicate benefits of strength or combined training. Moreover, emphasis on lower volume but higher intensity in combined training may be a feasible and effective mode to improve military occupational performance in recruits and active-duty soldiers.

This investigation determined the influence of technique and experience on arm retraction force required to apprehend a non-compliant suspect. Phase-One: Nine experienced RAAF military-police completed four apprehension simulations, peak arm retraction force was measured; i) Control(CON), ii) Pressure-Point(PP), iii) Targeted-Striking(TS) and iv) 2-Person(2Per) techniques. Phase-Two: Experienced (EXP, n = 8) or Inexperienced (INEXP, n = 22) military-police completed CON, PP and Pressure-Point + Coaching(PP + C). Strength was assessed in INEXP. EXP produced more force (178.7 N ± 25.9) than INEXP during CON, but no participant successfully apprehended the suspect. All EXP were successful with PP, arm retraction force 357 N (CI: 233.7,480.2) was lower compared to CON, but no difference was observed between PP and CON for INEXP. PP + C, 82% of INEXP were successful, force declined 138.2 N (CI: 67.8,208.5) compared to CON. All EXP required PP for successful apprehension. INEXP required PP + C for apprehension success. Muscular strength had a limited relationship with arm retraction force. Practitioner summary: For law enforcement personnel, apprehension of a suspect is a critical and physically demanding task, where success is associated with muscular strength and technique. We observed success in the apprehension of a simulated suspect by military law enforcement personnel was primarily determined by participant skill and experience and not muscular strength.

A cardiovascular requirement to facilitate thermal homeostasis may partly contribute to the elevated heart rate during eccentric cycling. This study compared the body temperature response to a bout of eccentric (ECC) and concentric (CON) cycling to account for the difference in heart rate. Eight (N = 8) aerobically trained males (age 35 y [SD 8], peak oxygen consumption 3.82 L.min-1 [SD 0.79]) completed an ECC cycling trial (60% PPO) followed by an oxygen consumption/duration matched CON trial (30   ∘ C , 35% RH) on a separate day. Trial termination was determined as an elevation in aural temperature, a surrogate of deep body temperature, by +0.5   ∘ C during ECC. Mean skin (8-sites) and body temperature (weighting of 80:20 for auditory canal and mean skin temperature) were calculated. Matching the oxygen consumption between the trials increased external work during ECC cycling (CON: 71 [SD 14] ECC: 194 [SD 38] W, p < 0.05) and elevated aural temperature (+0.5   ∘ C ) by 20 min 32 s [SD 9 min 19 s] in that trial. The peak rate of rise in aural temperature was significantly greater in ECC (CON: 0.012 [SD 0.007] ECC: 0.031 [SD 0.002] oC.s-1, p < 0.05). Aural, mean skin and body temperature were significantly higher during the ECC trial (p < 0.05) and this was accompanied by elevated mean heart rate (CON: 103 [SD 14] ECC: 118 [SD 12] b.min-1, p < 0.05) and thermal discomfort (p < 0.05). Moderate load eccentric cycling imposes an elevated thermal strain when compared to concentric cycling. This requirement for dissipating heat, in part, explains the elevated heart rate during eccentric cycling.

Eccentric and concentric exercise is associated with disparate acute and chronic responses. We uniquely interspersed workload equivalent eccentric cycling during each recovery period of a high intensity interval training (HIIT) cycling trial to determine acute cardiopulmonary, thermal and psycho-physiological responses. Twelve males [age 28 years (SD 6), peak oxygen consumption 48 mL ⋅ kg-1 ⋅ min-1 (SD 6)] completed two high intensity interval cycling trials [4 × 5 min, 60% peak power output (PPO)] separated by 7-10 days. The CONR trial required participants to cycle concentrically during each recovery period (5 min, 30% PPO). The ECC R trial modified the recovery to be eccentric cycling (5 min, 60% PPO). High intensity workload (CONR : 187 ± 17; ECC R: 187 ± 21 W), oxygen consumption (CONR : 2.55 ± 0.17; ECC R: 2.68 ± 0.20 L ⋅ min-1), heart rate (CONR : 165 ± 7; ECC R: 171 ± 10 beats ⋅ min-1) and RPE legs (CONR : 15 ± 3; ECC R: 15 ± 3) were equivalent between trials. Eccentric cycling recovery significantly increased external workload (CONR : 93 ± 18; ECC R: 196 ± 24 W, P < 0.01) yet lowered oxygen consumption (CONR : 1.51 ± 0.18; ECC R: 1.20 ± 0.20 L ⋅ min-1, P < 0.05) while heart rate (CONR : 132 ± 13; ECC R: 137 ± 12 beats ⋅ min-1) and RPE of the legs (CONR : 11 ± 7; ECC R: 12 ± 7) remained equivalent. There was no significant difference in the aural temperature between the trials (ECC R: 37.3 ± 0.1°C; CONR : 37.4 ± 0.1°C, P > 0.05), yet during recovery periods mean skin temperature was significantly elevated in the ECC R (ECC R: 33.9 ± 0.2°C; CONR : 33.3 ± 0.2°C, P < 0.05). Participants preferred ECC R (10/12) and rated the ECC R as more achievable (82.8 ± 11.4 mm) than CONR (79.4 ± 15.9 mm, P < 0.01). In conclusion, eccentric cycling during the recovery period of a HIIT training session, offers a novel approach to concurrent training methodology. The unique cardiopulmonary and skeletal muscle responses facilitate the achievement of both training stimuli within a single exercise bout.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of a novel low volume high intensity concurrent training regimen and warm-up on physiological performance and musculoskeletal injury in Australian recruits. DESIGN: Controlled longitudinal intervention. METHODS: Military recruits completed 12 weeks of either experimental (EXP: n=78, 6-8RM resistance loads, and high intensity intervals) or basic military (CON: n=69, usual practice) matched for total sessions and time. Endurance (3.2km 22kg-load carriage, V˙O2 peak, multi-stage fitness test (MSFT)), 1RM strength and local muscle endurance (bench, squat, box-lift and push-ups) and power (squat jump) were assessed at Weeks 1,6,12. Body composition, physical activity (PAC·min-1) and heart rate reserve (HRR%), were assessed at Weeks 2,7,9. Musculoskeletal injury and mechanism were recorded. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA interaction (group×time), mean difference and effect size (ES) are reported p≤0.05. RESULTS: A significant interaction over 12 weeks was observed for load carriage (ES -0.30), squat jump (ES 0.65), V˙O2 peak (ES 0.58), MSFT (ES 0.41), push-ups (ES 0.26), 1RM bench (ES 0.26), squat (ES 1.05) and box lift (ES 0.27) in EXP compared to CON. At Week 12 significantly greater squat (38.9kg), MSFT (2.1mL·kg-1·min-1), and faster load carriage (49.9s) was observed in EXP than CON, but no difference in body composition. EXP had a lower PAC·min-1 (641.1±63.1) but higher HRR% (21.8±4.0) compared to CON. EXP had a lower number of injuries (6) compared to CON (17). CONCLUSIONS: The inclusion of compound-specific resistance exercise and high intensity intervals improved physical function and was associated with reduced musculoskeletal injury.

BACKGROUND: Given the physical demands of mining and rescue operations, a physical employment standard was warranted to ensure capable workers are selected. While evaluations of muscular strength and muscular and cardiorespiratory endurance domains are common, assessment of a worker's ability to meet the physically demanding postural requirements is often neglected. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this investigation was to develop a valid assessment for NSW Mines Rescue Brigadesmen that replicated the combined muscular and cardiorespiratory endurance and postural demands of constructing a timber pillar. METHODS: Oxygen consumption () V̇O2) was measured and dominant postures identified when incumbent Brigadesmen constructed a timber pillar. A shelf-stacking assessment was designed and validated. RESULTS: When Brigadesmen performed the block placement role, the task elicited a mean V̇O2 of 1.6 L.min-1, and required repeated placement of ∼8.7 kg blocks from 0 to 3.0 m. A shelf stacking assessment (5 min, mean V̇O2 1.7 L.min-1) replicating dominant postures and requiring repeated block placement at 0, 0.65, 1.10, 1.64 and 2.20 m was developed. The demand of the test, performed within a discontinuous circuit, was subsequently verified (1.6 L.min-1). CONCLUSIONS: A valid, physiological aptitude test that considered the job-related movement patterns, in addition to cardiorespiratory and muscular endurance requirements, was developed for Brigadesmen.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the heterogeneity of physical adaptation in Australian Army recruits completing a 12-week basic military training regimen. DESIGN: A prospective research design. METHODS: Volunteer recruits (n=195) completed 12-weeks of basic military training. Recruit physical fitness was assessed at week 1, weeks 6-8 and week 12. Recruits in the upper (75th) and lower (25th) quartiles for each assessment were then analysed using a repeated measures two-way ANOVA. The relative magnitude of recruit adaptions were classified as positive response (Rpositive, ≥5%), limited response (Rlimited, >-5% to <5%) and negative response (Rnegative, ≤-5%); Chi-square analysis determined the proportional differences in the distribution of each quartile. RESULTS: An interaction (p<0.001) was observed in the lower and upper recruit quartiles for all assessments of physical fitness at each time point. After 12 weeks of military training the mean difference of the highest quartile was; 20-m multi-stage fitness test 7.4mL·kg-1·min-1, (CI:5.8:9.1), 2-min push-ups 20.1 reps, (CI:16.2:23.9), 1RM box lift 5.6kg, (CI:2.6:5.8) and load carriage 222.1s, (CI:174.7:269.4) compared to the lowest recruit quartile. The highest quartile demonstrated no improvement in 1RM box lift (-4%, -1%) and push-ups (2%, 0%) performance at weeks 6-8 and week 12 respectively. In contrast, adaptations in the lowest quartile for 1RM box lift (16%, 21%) and push-ups (46%, 46%) over the same time periods were observed. CONCLUSIONS: A significant proportion of recruits may complete basic military training with a decline in physical performance. Higher relative-intensity cardiorespiratory and resistance exercise should be considered to facilitate physical adaptation in all recruits.

Modern warfare operations often occur in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environments accompanied by physical exertion, cognitive overload, sleep restriction and caloric deprivation. The increasingly fast-paced nature of these operations requires military personnel to demonstrate readiness and resiliency in the face of stressful environments to maintain optimal cognitive and physical performance necessary for success. Resiliency, the capacity to overcome the negative effects of setbacks and associated stress on performance, is a complex process involving not only an individual's physiology and psychology, but the influence of factors such as sex, environment, and training. The purpose of this moderated roundtable was to address five key domains of resiliency in a point/counterpoint format: physiological versus psychological resiliency, sex differences, contributions of aerobic and strength training, thermal tolerance, and the role of nature versus nurture. Each speaker was given three minutes to present and the moderator facilitated questions and discussion following the panel's presentation. The interconnectedness of the five domains highlights the need for an interdisciplinary approach to understand and build resilience to enhance military performance.

OBJECTIVES: This study determined if eccentric endurance cycling, eliciting a low cardiovascular demand, could stimulate muscle strength adaptations in sedentary middle-aged males. DESIGN: Twenty-four middle-aged sedentary males were allocated to concentric (CON) or matched workload eccentric (ECC) cycling (60% peak concentric workload) according to their maximal voluntary isometric quadriceps strength. METHODS: Seventeen participants [42.7±8.3 years, BMI 28.6±5.2, peak oxygen consumption [30.5±5.8mLkg-1min-1] completed 8 weeks (2 sessions per week) of CON (n=8) or ECC (n=9) cycle training. Incline leg press (6RM), maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) torque of the quadriceps and peak oxygen consumption were measured at baseline and 8 weeks. RESULTS: Eccentric cycle training resulted in low cardiovascular demand (CON 154±2; ECC 95±3bmin-1P<0.05) and ratings of perceived exertion (CON 14.9±0.3; ECC 9.5±0.3/20 P<0.05). Peak oxygen consumption improved within the CON group (Baseline 27.4±2.1; 8 weeks: 30.0±1.7mLkg-1min-1P<0.05) and not within the ECC group (Baseline 33.2±1.5; 8 weeks 33.3±1.6mLkg-1min-1) following training. 6RM (CON 176±20; ECC 192±11kg) and MVIC (CON 199±25; ECC 199±25Nm) strength were equivalent at baseline (P>0.05). Both groups significantly increased 6RM (CON 13.0±3.0; ECC 10.7±3.2%) and MVIC (CON 12.9±4.3; ECC 18.8±3.0%) relative to their own baseline (P<0.05). Therefore, improved leg strength was equivalent between CON and ECC groups despite the varied training (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In sedentary middle age males, eccentric endurance cycling with a low cardiovascular demand, increased both quadriceps isometric and 6RM strength comparable to a matched workload concentric cycling program.

J Strength Cond Res 32(3): 700-707, 2018-Pacing is critical for athletic endeavors, and the strategies used by athletes are often modified after practice. The importance of practice when completing occupational assessments has been established; however, the effect of load carriage and discrete subtask activities on strategies to modulate physical exertion to complete a work task simulation is currently unknown. Therefore, we sought to investigate the effect of practice on pacing strategies used to complete a physiological aptitude assessment circuit. Twenty-five participants completed an assessment designed for firefighters on 3 occasions. The circuit comprised 6 disparate tasks (including unilateral load carriage, static holds and fire-hose drags) with lap and task completion times recorded. Pacing strategies were examined relative to the effect of practice throughout (globally) and within the assessment (discrete tasks). By the second visit, overall test performance and discrete task performance of the first, fourth, and fifth tasks improved, respectively, by 12.6% (95% confidence interval: ±3.6%, p < 0.01), 12.4% (±6.0%, p < 0.01), 11.7% (±4.9%, p < 0.01), and 17.8% (±10.0%, p < 0.03). Compared with visit 1, significant improvements in performance were observed on the second and third visit. However, no significant additional improvement was noted between visits 2 and 3. Therefore, to reliably assess performance of the occupational test, 1 practice session (2 visits) is required. Practice is important to allow individuals to optimize their pacing strategy for successful performance.

OBJECTIVES: Compare traditional military physical training and more contemporary physical training on catabolic and anabolic hormones and body composition in recruits undertaking basic military training (BMT). DESIGN: A prospective cross-sectional study design. METHODS: Two recruit intakes were assessed over the 12-week Australian Army BMT course. The control group (CON) comprised 40 recruits (26M/14F) and the experimental group (EXP) comprised 35 recruits (25M/10F). Hormone concentrations (IGF-I, testosterone, cortisol, SHBG) and body composition were assessed at weeks 1 and 12. The EXP group undertook a higher-load/intensity physical training regimen, while CON undertook the extant physical training program which focused on cardiovascular and muscular endurance. Total physical activity within physical training sessions was assessed during weeks 2, 6 and 9. RESULTS: There was a significant group×time interaction (p<0.01) for IGF-I and cortisol, and main effects over time (p<0.01) for IGF-I, cortisol and SHBG. There were main effects for time (p<0.05) for lean and fat mass, and these changes were associated (p<0.05) with altered hormone concentrations. Physical activity levels were approximately 50% lower in EXP than CON during physical training sessions. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to report a differential hormone response to contrasting physical conditioning regimen during BMT. The results indicate that the recruits who completed the EXP physical training regimen had an attenuated stress profile. This is an important observation, as any enhancement of recruit training outcomes are critical for Army noting that fundamentally, organisational capability is reliant upon the physical capability of its personnel.

OBJECTIVES: Compare two 12-week low-intensity exercise regimens on components of physical function and quality of life in community-dwelling healthy yet sedentary adults aged over 60. DESIGN: This study used a randomised, multi-arm, controlled trial design. METHODS: Thirty-nine sedentary participants (29 women), aged 67.7±6.7 years were randomly allocated to either a 12-week Thai Yoga (TY) or Tai Chi (TC) for 90min twice per week, or telephone counselling Control (C). A Senior Fitness Test (chair-stand, arm-curl, sit-&-reach, back-scratch, 8-foot up-&-go and 6-min walk) and Short-Form 36 Health Survey, Centre for Epidemiological Studies of Depression, Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly and the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale were assessed at baseline, six, 12 weeks, and three months after the completion of the regimen. RESULTS: After 12 weeks, chair-stand (mean difference, 2.69; 95% CI, 0.97-4.41; P<0.001), arm-curl (2.23; 95% CI, 0.06-4.52; P=0.009), sit-&-reach (1.25; 95% CI, 0.03-2.53; P=0.013), back-scratch (2.00; 95% CI, 0.44-3.56; P=0.005), 8-foot up-&-go (-0.43; 95% CI, -0.85 to 0.01; P=0.013), 6-min walk (57.5; 95% CI, 20.93-94.07; P<0.001), vitality (13.27; 95% CI, 2.88-23.66; P=0.050) and enjoyment (7.96; 95% CI, 3.70-12.23; P=0.001) significantly improved in TY compared to C, however no change was observed in TC compared to C. TY improved in chair-stand (2.31; 95% CI, 0.59-4.03; P=0.007), sit-&-reach (1.38; 95% CI, 0.10-2.66; P=0.007), 6-min walk (32.31; 95% CI, -4.26-68.88; P=0.015), vitality (12.88; 95% CI, 2.50-23.27; P=0.040) and enjoyment (5.65; 95% CI, 1.39-9.92; P=0.010) compared to TC after 12 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that older adults can make significant improvements in their health and well-being by engaging in low intensity Thai Yoga exercise.
